Dr. Rabia Atayee is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pharmacy in the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. She earned her doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of California, San Francisco in 2003. Following graduation, Dr. Atayee completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of California, San Diego. In fall of 2008 Dr. Atayee completed specialty training through ASHP Research and Education Foundation Pain Management Traineeship, and received her board certification in pharmacotherapy by the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties.
Dr. Atayee joined the faculty in December 2008 and serves as a co-chair for the winter quarter Pharmacy Practice Course. Dr. Atayee is also an Ambulatory Care Pharmacist Specialist who established a palliative care pharmacist role at the UCSD Rebecca and John Moores Cancer Center in 2006. Dr. Atayee practices under a collaborative practice protocol. She has obtained a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) license and a National Provider Identification (NPI). Dr. Atayee works with a consult palliative care service at the Moores Cancer Center, otherwise known as the Doris A. Howell Service. Dr. Atayee currently performs comprehensive initial and follow-up symptom assessment of oncology patients. She collaborates with primary oncology physicians in developing a care plan. In addition Dr. Atayee provides education and support to patients and their families throughout the disease. Dr. Atayee is a preceptor to students and residents in her clinical practice. She also serves as an educator and mentor in the area of pain and palliative care for staff at UCSD Medical Center.
Dr. Atayee is currently involved in researching including ketamine for mucositis pain, the use of methylnaltrexone for opioid-induced constipation, psychosocial assessment of palliative care patients, clinical and financial impacts of a ambulatory palliative care service, and monitoring and counseling guidelines for oral chemotherapy.
