Research Summary:

Dr. Manoguerra retired from active service in 2007 and is on a recall appointment to provide admissions and student advising services. Prior to his retirement, Dr. Manoguerra carried on an active research program in the area of clinical toxicology. He was Director of the San Diego Division of the California Poison Control System from 1977 through 2002. In 2000, he joined the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences as founding Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Professor of Clinical Pharmacy. Prior to 2000, he was a Professor of Clinical Pharmacy in the San Diego Program of the University of California, San Francisco, School of Pharmacy.

Academic Achievements

Education: Pharm.D. (1971) University of California San Francisco; Residency in Clinical Pharmacy (1972) UCSF; Board certified in applied toxicology by (1987) American Board of Applied Toxicology (ABAT).
Awards and Honors: Fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology (2000); Diplomat of the American Board of Applied Toxicology (1987); Excellence in Teaching Award from the SSPPS Class of 2006.
Leadership Experience: Founding SSPPS Associate Dean for Student Affairs (2000 - present); Past-President of the American Association of Poison Control Centers (1984-1986); Member of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Applied Toxicology (1998-2001); Member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology (1999-2005). Member of the San Diego Air Pollution Control District Hearing Board (1993-1998); Member of the San Diego County Environmental Health Advisory Board (1989-2004).

* Actively involved in student advising relative to academic performance issues, professionalism and postgraduate training opportunities.

Key Contributions to Pharmaceutical Sciences

* As one of the founding faculty-of the SSPPS, Dr. Manoguerra established the admissions and student advising programs and was involved in the design and implementation of the curriculum.
* Dr. Manoguerra was one of the early pioneers in the development of the role of the pharmacist in poison control and clinical toxicology services and research.
* Clinical research in the development of treatments for iron poisoning; development of clinical guidelines for use by regional poison centers; assessment of the efficacy of gastric decontamination procedures.
* Current research on the quality of life of pharmacy students.
