Private Collection Donated to UC San Diego School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
The University of California, San Diego School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has received its first private collection donation from Louis J. Motta, B.S. in Pharmacy. The extensive private collection includes a series of rare books, a collection of mortars and pestles, several sets of show globes, and various apothecary jars and bottles.
Mr. Motta was born in Michigan and attended Wayne State University. He originally majored in mechanical engineering but completed his education in pharmacy. Mr. Motta later moved to California where as Vice-President he started the Southern California Division of Kaiser Permanente Pharmacies. He then worked as the head of Marketing for the Xerox Corporation Medical Diagnostics Division and later worked as the Director of Pharmacy at St. Vincent's Hospital.
Mr. Motta retired in 1991 and since then spends his time doing volunteer work with the Indian Health Council, Inc. on the Rincon Indian tribe reservation.
It is expected that the collection will be displayed in the Dean's Suite of the new School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences building, which will be completed in the Fall of 2002. In the meantime the collection will be displayed in the Dean's Office and Business Office of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
The Planning Committee for the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences thanks Mr. Motta for his most generous donation.
