Alumni Spotlight: Gellan Kashou (Class of 2018)

What have you been doing since graduation?

Since graduating from Skaggs in 2018, I have worked as a clinical pharmacist in both IV home infusion and specialty pharmacy. I currently work at KabaFusion as an IV home infusion clinical pharmacist with an emphasis on IVIG (intravenous immunoglobulin) and TPN (total parenteral nutrition). My day-to-day consists of managing refills and clinical concerns for patients as well as coordinating care with their physician.

Any words of wisdom for the new graduates?

Be open to anything and everything! The great thing about a Pharm.D. is that it opens SO many doors. There are so many settings to work in, ranging from retail and hospital to industry. I didn’t even know the IV home infusion setting existed until my rotations! So keep an open mind and explore! You never know where you’ll find yourself.

What makes you love what you do?

IV home infusion is truly a collaborative practice. Physicians and prescribers continuously call the pharmacy for recommendations and vice versa. This cooperation allows me to truly make an impact on my patients’ lives and form a connection with each one of them. All in all, pharmacy allows me to be a problem-solver, professional, and confidante all at once – something I truly relish.

What was one memorable moment from your time at Skaggs?

One of my most memorable moments from my time at Skaggs was participating in the SSPPS Culture Fusion Fashion Show. It was so fun to see all my classmates and professors come together and show off their talents from all over the world. I even got to rock the runway with one of my favorite professors, Dr. Atayee! I always loved seeing everyone outside the classroom and forming life-long connections and friends.

How did Skaggs help prepare you for your career?

Skaggs undoubtedly equipped me with the clinical knowledge I needed to become a successful pharmacist. However, above all, Skaggs offered a very wide variety of APPEs which ultimately led me to where I am today. As stated previously, I didn’t even know IV home infusion existed prior to APPEs. Now, I work at the company where I did my APPE rotation! Skaggs does a fantastic job of finding a wide range of APPEs with preceptors who are truly willing to go above and beyond.
