Overview
This page outlines the process for how you will use Canvas, UC San Diego’s learning management system, during your onboarding period and throughout your PharmD coursework. While many of you may already be familiar with Canvas from previous academic experiences, this page explains how Canvas is specifically used by the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and what to expect as you begin the majority of your P1 onboarding tasks.
Enrollment in SPPS ADM "Course"
Your first Canvas enrollment will be SPPS ADM. SPPS ADM is not a course for academic credit. Instead, it serves as your P1 Onboarding hub and is where you will complete required pre‑matriculation tasks and review essential onboarding information.
Once enrolled, you should receive an email notification and SPPS ADM will appear automatically on your Canvas Dashboard under Published Courses.
Important Enrollment Access Deadline
You must click on and accept your Canvas enrollment access notification for SPPS ADM by the date specified in the email where you received a link to this webpage. Failure to access your SPPS ADM enrollment by this deadline may place you in poor admissions standing and could results in rescission of your offer of admission.
Navigating SPPS ADM
Once inside SPPS ADM, you can expect to navigate it similar to a standard Canvas course:
- Home
Provides general onboarding information and links to Modules, as well as contact information for key onboarding staff. - Announcements
Used by onboarding staff to share important updates or reminders, when applicable. - Modules
Contains monthly onboarding modules with required tasks and informational documents. Modules are expected to be published on the following schedule (dates may vary if adjustments are necessary):- April 13, 2026
- May 11, 2026
- June 8, 2026
- July 6, 2026
- August 3, 2026
- Assignments
Displays specific tasks that are tracked for completion during onboarding. - Grades
While no academic grades are posted, this area allows you to track completion of assigned onboarding tasks and view any comments from onboarding staff, if applicable. - To Do
Located on the right side of the screen, this list shows currently assigned tasks as well as upcoming onboarding-related events.
What Happens Next?
Over the coming months:
- You will complete each module as it is published, paying close attention to assignment deadlines. Some deadlines may occur before the next module opens, while others may fall later in the onboarding process.
- Onboarding requirements may require that you progress through tasks and documents in a specific order before moving on. Step‑by‑step instructions will be provided for all required actions.
- New modules will open as onboarding progresses.
Please check Canvas regularly, as it will be the primary platform used to deliver onboarding instructions, tasks, and communications.
