Volunteer Service Process

Affiliate Service or NS/Vol Faculty Appointment Application Process and Benefits

Pharmacists, residents, and other health care professionals (HCPs) who provide significant preceptorship or teaching to our students are eligible to apply for Affiliate Service or NS/Voluntary Faculty appointment at the SSPPS. Submitted initial applications and subsequent renewals are reviewed by the Non-Salary/Volunteer (NS/Vol) Faculty Committee and/or Human Resources (SSPPSHR) staff by internal review criteria to ensure qualification requirements are met. Benefits

  3. Attend preceptor development workshops hosted by the SSPPS and partners, and receive CAPE continuing education credits if applicable.
  4. View opportunities to participate in and precept students at community health fairs and other educational events.
  5. Receive our quarterly SSPPS Preceptor Newsletter and general SSPPS Newsletter.
  6. Eligible to be awarded one of several Excellence Awards.

Affiliate (most common/recommended for preceptors)

Qualifications

  • Occasionally provides scholarly service for SSPPS students.

Process

  • Complete the Request Form and upload an updated CV/resume via the SSPPS Request Form.

Management

  • Reviewed by the Office of Experiential Education (OEE).

NS/Vol Faculty Appointment (available to new applicants by nomination only)

Qualifications

  • Meet qualification criteria and be nominated by SSPPS Faculty.
  • Anticipate an annual minimum of 50 hours of precepting or teaching SSPPS students.
  • Renewals require evidence of strong teaching evaluations and submission of an academic review packet.

Process

  • Nomination by an SSPPS Faculty member, followed by a request for appointment materials from SSPPSHR.
  • Application is reviewed and approved by the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences.

Management

  • Notification of appointment within four to six months of submission.
  • HR staff will request additional paperwork for the review packet.
  • Initial three-year appointment, with renewals every five years.
  • If employed by the UC or VA system, not eligible for NS/Vol appointments.
  • Renewals/Maintenance of Appointment require:
    • Completion and maintenance of all 11 UC Learning Center required courses.
    • Evidence of strong teaching evaluations from SSPPS students.
    • Evidence of scholarly activity.
    • UC Bio-bibliography.
  • Completion of Payroll Paperwork required, although this is a voluntary position (includes I-9).
  • These appointments provide significant scholarly activities within the UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic.
