On February 25th, 2023, SSPPS faculty and staff had the opportunity to attend the UC San Diego 21st Annual Black History Month Scholarship Brunch. This was the first time since the start of the pandemic that the brunch was hosted in person and the first time that representatives from SSPPS were in attendance. There were several exciting announcements regarding the UC San Diego Black community, including the establishment of a Black Diaspora and African American Studies (BDAAS) major degree program. Remarkably, the program also announced that two students would be graduating with a BDAAS degree this year, a historic event for UC San Diego. The theme of the programming was Black Resistance and Dr. Mary Frances Berry, an esteemed lawyer, author, and activist, served as the program keynote speaker. The program highlighted the fortitude and persistence of Black individuals over the course of history. A key takeaway was a token of advice provided by Dr. Berry: She urged the new generation of activists to identify their specific role in invoking change and focus on being the best advocate and activist in that specified area. Above all, she proudly stated the “struggle for freedom continues”, and we all have a place in fighting for the freedoms of humanity. It was a rewarding experience to share this space with the UC San Diego campuswide Black community, and truly inspiring to hear the stories and experiences of the scholarship awardees.
