UC San Diego Health is ranked No. 1 in San Diego and No. 6 in California, placing it among the nation’s best hospitals, according to the  2020-2021 U.S. News & World Report. The annual rankings are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for a variety of health conditions, from common elective procedures to complex surgeries.

The health system is also ranked in the top 50 for 10 specialties: Cancer (#47), Cardiology & Heart Surgery (#31), Gastroenterology & GI (#32), Geriatrics (#13), Gynecology (#46), Nephrology (#34), Neurology & Neurosurgery (#22), Orthopedics (#42) Pulmonology (#15) and Urology (#36).

The annual “Best Hospitals” report distinguishes hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging health conditions. U.S. News reviewed more than 4,500 hospitals and provided national rankings in 16 specialties. Only 134 hospitals (2.9%) were ranked in at least one specialty. These rankings are an extraordinary honor that recognize the dedication of our entire staff, and our commitment to fulfilling our mission and vision to create a healthier world through groundbreaking research and the delivery of outstanding care.

UC San Diego Health is also rated as “high performing” in eight common procedures and conditions, which cover a spectrum of care from heart procedures, such as bypass and valve surgeries, to cancer surgeries for the lung and colon. To be recognized as a destination for patients with deeply complex diseases and conditions is further testament to the multidisciplinary care and nationally recognized experts that exist at UC San Diego Health.
